Being stuck in Melbourne for Christmas is a good time to catch up on some Bollywood, especially given the freezing weather, followed by a heatwave. Sadly, some of the DVDs I took didn’t work too well. i know they are all cheap copies but they used to be good cheap copies..
First up was Zindagi na milegi dobara. Three friends go on a bucks holiday to Spain, which dredges up old conflicts and forms new bonds. Not a bad go at a mates movie, and some nice Spanish scenery. The male actors are very good but the female roles are very poorly written. Forgettable music. 60/100
Next was Anjaana Anjaani with Priyanka Chopra, so that’s worth 80 points already! A dark sort of comedy romance, it features two young people that meet when about to commit suicide. What follows is a happy/sad film which you of course know will end well. Not that impressed with Ranbir Khan. Some excellent songs, especially the Mohit Chauhan song Tujhe Bhula Diya and the title song. 78/100
Karz is the movie that one of my all time favourites, Om Shanti Om is based. Not that I knew this until the words pop up in the blockbuster song midway through the movie. I can be so slow sometimes, I didn’t even realize the plot was the same. A true classic of Bollywood, with lots of drama, action, music and bad fight scenes. 85/100
